Who are the Friends of
Rib Mountain State Park

The Friends of Rib Mountain is a group of volunteers organized for the charitable and educational purpose of assisting the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to improve, preserve, and promote Rib Mountain State Park. For more information to join the group, Download Friends Membership Form.

Incorporated as a non-profit, 501c(3) corporation, in 1993, the Friends have provided funding and manpower for many improvements and additions to the park including:

  • Development and mapping of hiking trails
  • Construction of the amphitheater
  • Construction of the campground shower
  • A 38 acre addition to the park
  • Development of interpretive panels
  • Development and printing of a Teacher’s Study Guide to Rib Mountain
  • Creation of an Endowment Fund for future improvements to the park
  • Equipment purchases for the park including a Case skid steer, a maintenance utility vehicle, and a wood splitter
  • Funding for lighting and parking projects

The Friends of Rib Mountain State Park also conduct numerous ongoing programs including: nature hikes, candlelight snowshoe hikes, summer music concerts,
and naturalist programs.

The operation of the concession stand and the sale of firewood for campers at Rib Mountain are ongoing projects that help raise funds to support the Friends activities.

Intrepretive Center

The Friends of Rib Mountain are currently in the planning phase for the development of an education and interpretive center for the park.  The Friends are working with the professional planners of  the UW–Stevens Point Schmeeckle Reserve in preparing a  master plan for the building that will determine the size and scope of the proposed center.   When the plan is complete fund-raising will begin with a goal to break ground in 2011.
